Have you ever thought you might have shifted into a parallel universe without knowing? Today was such a day.
All started off well when we met up at Calton Lees carpark but the weather seemed have been taking strangeness lessons. As we walked across the Derwent Bridge we were all perspiring profusely but seconds later we were pulling our coats tight around us we crossed the field to Beeley. Why was there a sheep marked BO standing under the tree? It had two companions so it can't have been that bad. This was just a foretaste of what was to come.
We passed through the pretty village of Beeley and found the correct path up to the woods and through the massive gates of the old quarry to stop by a pretty waterfall. All seemed fine as we set off along the track.
Passing through a gate we were confronted by a herd of cows. We walked towards them but they moved towards us. We stopped but they kept coming. We made appropriate noises that they should back off but they came to even quicker. It was then that we turned on our heels and ran as fast our feet could carry us. Paul and Lindy took a quick way out over the first gate not realising it led into a field that the cows could access. The rest of us made to the gate we came through and waited while Paul and Lindy climbed over several walls to get back.
On returning we tried to shoo them away. Braveness about going back in the field soon disappeared when we saw the size of the bull. Fortunately after a while they dispersed and we continued at a very sprightly pace across the field.
On leaving we had to walk up the road and turn left into some woods. Lindy found an entrance into the woods and we followed a path which was winding and which became less hospitable until we were back close to the road further down the hill than were we started. Brian then had the bright idea of following Jed (the dog). We followed a track through the woods that Grizzly Adams would have been proud of and were soon quite lost. It was then we met the witch in her Brussel Sprout house. She couldn't understand why she could never entice any kids in. Finally Jed bless him led us to a decent path. Paul argued we should follow this path downhill (I wonder why) whereas the actual route was up hill. We stopped for lunch by some waterfalls before continuing. We finally made it out of the woods at a point only 100m from where we went in. Not bad 1 hour to move 100m.
Back on track we made a diversion to Hob o' the Hurst House and ancient bronze age archaeological site. However when we arrived we decided a mound of earth was we were standing on was the site until we spotted the actual site some 100m away.
Finally we battled against the wind to reach Chatsworth Park where we walked through avenues of rhododendron all glistening in the sun. Normality returned and we completed the walk before visiting the Wheatsheaf for the Apres walk. Still the day was not yet completely normal as Julie and Andrew went in the wrong direction to the pub.
Our next planned walk is in Narnia or Middle earth.
