The walk was virtually as described earlier. The woods were carpeted with bluebells as well as forgetmenots, white campion, buttercups and daisies. The wood ants roamed around like something out of that film with Charlton Heston, the naked jungle. I didn't hear a cuckoo but no surprise there. There were also some round shiny black beetles about half an inch long. Any naturalists out there able to say what they were?
Everything was perfect until we reached Abney where we decided to return via Bretton. The path between Abney and Nether Bretton was definitely challenging, especially the ascent from Bretton Clough. Still we called in at the Barrel to recoup our strength. The return along Sir William Road was unpleasant to walk on with lots of ankle turny loose stones. The compensation was a pleasant drink in sunshine outside the Little John. Yet another pleasant days walking. We really have had good luck with the weather so far this year.
