A slightly chilly start to this walk made even more unpleasant by the cost of car parking at castleton. Some of us more miserly parked down the road and walked in. 5 minutes to save £4.50 sounds good to me.
We were soon warmed up though as cave dale was steep and rocky so a tough climb up the dale made the sweat drip profusely. The humid conditions in the dale didn't help but once we were at the top a cool breeze soon brought down the temperature. In fact it was decidedly cold at the top in a stiffish breeze.
Making our way rapidly down the Limestone trail we were half way round before 12.30 so we decided to call in at Peak Forest for some liquid refreshements. Taking some not very well trodden paths sudeenly revealed Paula's well hidden fascist nature. Insisting that she did not want to come out on the main road we back tracked on even lesser used paths back to the dam road. Well spotted Brian for seeing the style which muct have been last used by Izaak Walton.
The Devonshire in Peak Forest was empty when we arrived but full when we left, we must be trend setters. Must admit to not liking its 21st century decoration. We then stopped for lunch before heading off over the limestone plateau back to Castleton.
The route above Cones Dale was incredibly bleak, only the sheep for company and their conversation seemed to be limited to baa. We could have stripped off to the buff as it was so deserted. Eventually by luck rather than judgement we reached the path across to Mam Tor. This was beautiful green pasture and the views were amazing. The sun decided to come out as well and the temperature quickly increased to Tee shirt conditions. Fortunately it was down hill all the way back to Castleton. By now the village was like Oxford Street but we managed to find a pub to sit in the sun and partake of another drink. Seemed an easy 10 miles, we must be getting good at this. Another thoroughly enjoyable day.
